I don't think there is enough Ambrose E. Burnside fan art.
Even using a reference I fucked up his face, eyes way to big but whatev. You'll notice the illusion of pseudo lighting, easily done in gray scale.
haven't done a portrait since middle school art class. As you can see I flunked. you cann fullsize if you want but it looks better the smaller it is, haha. :]
The character Burnside (C) History.

Historical? fun fact! General Burnside was the last man in any military to have sideburns in the war. In the first Geneva Convention of 1864 it was decided that sideburns were too awesome to be involved in war and declared an unfair tactical advantage against the anyone's enemies. Last revision in 1949 to also include the neckbeard, but for its lameness.

Here is the constructive critique you wanted:

Actually even though I don't have the reference I will say that you have a good start here. I would suggest lighten up the contrast first and use what you have as mid tone. Then go in and start to put in your defined shadows don't be timid about but pay attention to where the shadows fall because of your light source and go in and do your highlights with areas like cheeks being soft ones and shiny areas like his head and nose shiny.

His uniform also seems a little flat and un impressive I would very soft highlights and shadows but make the texture like if they were a very fine flannel or velvet.

wow that was awesome. I need to take an art class before i can understand what you are referring to but thanks!
That last comment is just hilariously ridiculous. Unfair tactical advantage? lmao
How are sideburns a tatical advantage? Maybe because they're extra "scratchy".

It is scientifically proven that if grown long enough sideburns can work as antennas to absorb testosterone from other people.
lmao.
